DESCRIPTION:Michael Hofstätter (born 1953) and Wolfgang Pauzenberger (bo
rn 1955) founded the group PAUHOF architects in 1986 in Vienna/Linz/Berl
in. They develop urban studies\, try out architectural experiments\, par
ticipate in contests (national and international). They develop “archite
ctures” - currently they are working on their project „StadtSzenarien al
 s MetaModelle“ (city scenarios as meta-models).\n\nWalking as a Method\n
„Walking around is fundamental to the everyday practice of social life“
and „to much anthropological fieldwork“\, was noted by Jo Lee and Tim In
gold. With this\, they emphasize the usage of walking as a method in eve
ryday life\, as well as in field studies. Walking is a form of coming cl
oser to a place\, to explore and to appropriate it. An integral part of
walking is a reference to the body\, which forms itself while sensing th
e surrounding - one could even argue\, that space gets apprehended and a
ppreciated only through physical movement. Understanding does not only w
ork on a cognitive\, linguistic layer\, but also with sensual and aesthe
tic parameters. If walking is understood as an “instrument of insight”\,
it can be used as a method for research - to generate results\, that ar
e not detached from the physical experience.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:“Toy-Kit-Architectures” are temporary sculptures built with
modular systems. Often\, those modules consist of parts from concrete sh
uttering (h-20 carriers) or mass-produced goods\, such as inflatable obj
ects. Those elements are modeled to “temporary sculptures” using lashing

hole is understood as a playing field - a place for projects\, artistic
interventions and urban new media arts. Discoursive city walks with expe

DESCRIPTION:Art\, music and aggression can be the same thing. After many
generations of youth who were obsessed with music\, the boundaries betw
een art and music are dissolved. Many artists create works that transfor

music addict by exploring their own fetish for Vinyl records and other c
ollectables. The essence of the encore is ones need for more. \nCurator:

DESCRIPTION:Project\, Intervention in public space\nArtists: Johannes Ku
bin & Marianne Lang (Kitty Corner)\n\nRadio Convoy is an acoustic experi
ment\, initiated by Johannes Kubin and Marianne Lang.\nA pirate radio st
ation will transmit artistic audio recordings of ten to twenty artists (
most of them from fine arts) via radio. The whole setting is mobile\, wh
ich means not only the pirate station will travel through Vienna but mor
eover the whole audience will try to track the station\, in order not to
lose the signal. The audience will be invited by e-mail or via facebook
\, they meet the pirate bus with their cars in the 2nd district of Vienn
a\, then they drive in a convoy\, not knowing the route and the final de
stination. During the whole show the audience can influence the route by
mobile/telephone voting\, so that there is a possibility of creating ex
citing situations or unplanned stopovers caused by the votes (e.g. drive
-in\, one ways\, gas stations\, change of driver – there is also the pos
sibility to change cars or car members – and hitchhikers).\n\nThe radio
show is a compound of artistic recordings\, music\, live-acts and melodi
zed performances\, which will take place in the car or at places on the
route. There will be a DJ for the background music and a moderator\, who
will moderate or take care of the feedback and comments received from t
he participants. There will be no censorship on the shows and audio trac
ks\, the artists are fee to choose their topics and content. With the pe
rformance\, Radio Convoy likes to pose questions on the media “pirate ra
dio” itself: What options does a subversive media like a pirate radio st
ation offer? Where does this acoustic excursion lead to? Is the convoy a
militant metaphor for „My car is my castle“? Where does the road-trip l

to prevent the spreading of the plague by the utmost human vigilance: vi

or that the infected people should perfectly know themselves. [Daniel D

the workshop proposes the revealing of materiality and message\, of self

Methods of revelation are not limited to the esoteric (EVP\,ITC\, dowsin

d symptomatic sites. Paranoid steganography meets psychoanalysis meets d
etection under Burroughs\; "... everything he sees or hears is there at
that time to be seen and heard."\n\nActivities will include the dowsing\
, scrying and divining of buboes on the skin of the city\, the rubbing\,

DESCRIPTION:Sound Tossing is an alternative type of street art that uses
sound as a medium of creative expression in a public space. As the stre
ets belong to the people\, the intention is to appeal to anyone who want
s to shape their acoustic space.\n\nWhile street art has a rich history
in terms the formation of the urban landscape\, mainly through the appro
priation of wall space\, Sound Tossing offers a way to play with urban a
esthetics through filling space with unique acoustic input. It provides
new ways to add meaning to public spaces. Within the workshop people can

DESCRIPTION:The 120days of *buntu is a mash-up of 120 different Ubuntu o
perating systems (OS). It works from the source code of popular Linux/GN
U and redistributes modified software through the Internet and through a
new distribution model\, the so called Street-Sneaker-Net inspired by t
he illegal CD/DVD sellers in the streets of São Paolo\, Brazil. Computer
operating systems are imposing many rules and dogmas onto the ordinary
user\; thus an OS becomes an inescapable device of our control-driven so
cial environment. By breaking and modifying the rules\, we can liberate
ourselves and discover new facets of pre-determined paths\, similar to s
trategies practiced in situationism within urban environments. We envisi
on the operating system as a contemporary replacement of urban space. Th
e systems we are creating are reflections of life situations and desktop
-user experiences within the genre of software art. They comprise a coll
ection of idiosyncratic but useless distributions. While default systems
impose ever more rules and dogmas\, making them similar to increased co
ntrol over public space\, the project emphasizes that they are open to m
odification\, reuse and public action. The 120days of *buntu incorporate
s the production and distribution of a user-determined OS. Each OS is a
 self-contained Live CD/USB stick\; a PC/Mac can be instantly booted off
it. These OS interventions are being brought back into the physical spac
e\, given away for free and distributed in the city.

DESCRIPTION:Elke Krasny is a cultural theorist\, urban researcher\, cura
tor and author\, as well as senior lecturer at the academy of fine arts
vienna\, exhibiting and presenting internationally. She works with proce
ss-oriented research on architecture\, the city\, social engagement in a
rtistic practice\, gender concerns and cultural identity\, organizing ex
 hibitions\, publications\, walks\, symposia and talks on said topics.\n\
nWalking as a Method\n„Walking around is fundamental to the everyday pra
ctice of social life“ and „to much anthropological fieldwork“\, was note
d by Jo Lee and Tim Ingold. With this\, they emphasize the usage of walk
ing as a method in everyday life\, as well as in field studies. Walking
is a form of coming closer to a place\, to explore and to appropriate it
. An integral part of walking is a reference to the body\, which forms i
tself while sensing the surrounding - one could even argue\, that space
gets apprehended and appreciated only through physical movement. Underst
anding does not only work on a cognitive\, linguistic layer\, but also w
ith sensual and aesthetic parameters. If walking is understood as an “in
strument of insight”\, it can be used as a method for research - to gene
rate results\, that are not detached from the physical experience.\n\n

ameworks can be used to interface with urban environments\, create publi
c installations\, and implement local and global networked experiences.\
n\nOver two days we’ll walk through complete examples introducing the Op
enFrameworks system. Together we’ll build a simple drawing application\,
do image processing\, learn how to network an installation using OSC\,
and program interactivity using real time face detection. The second day
will be an open coding jam where participants will be free to begin pur
suing bigger projects. We’ll be there to debug and give guidance on tack
ling your ideas.\n\nParticipants should have some experience in programm
ing in another language such as Java\, javascript\, or Processing\, or C
